Farewell

From a very limited point of view, I recollect the reaction of a dear friend who bid farewell to his mother on a journey she'd never return from.

You could never see the pain in his eyes

Or tell the sadness in voice.

Neither would you ever know the despair in heart

Or the sorrow that keeps him up at night.

I heard him laugh and make jokes all day

But I could never guess,

It was his only recluse from the gaping hole,

She left when she took his joy along with her.

I've never known such pain

And dear God I wishn't to..

At least not anytime soon at all.

I didn't and still don't know what to say to him

To ease his pain or make his chest seem a little lighter.

How am supposed to comfort him?

Someone who'd never again know his mother's touch

Nor the taste of her hand?

What am I to tell him?

It gets easier?

Or that that the pain would subside?

These things don't.

And with each passing day,

You realise you never get to see her again

Or never feel the warmth of her embrace

And that knot in your chest, never untangles

But only gets tighter until you just can't breathe..
